AQW: Finding Your Woo-Woo

A Quick Word on: Woo-Woo

Crystals.  Horoscopes.  Phases of the moon.  Grounding. Breathwork.  Meditation. Centering.  Somatic release. Manifestation.

If you’d asked me a couple of years ago, ‘What does ‘woo-woo’ mean to you?’ I would have rattled off a lot of these things.

Fast forward to January 2nd of 2024.  I found myself on a walk in the middle of the first workday of the year, my bare feet sinking in the cold, squishy mud of Hyde Park.  As a few passersby shot sideways glances, I laughed out loud.  ‘People must think I’m absolutely nuts,’ I muttered to myself.

But I carried on. I knew I felt alive in that moment. I knew I’d feel great and focused for hours to come.  And even the laughter (at myself) was giving me a boost that was fun and light! 😂

Proof.

And yes, my pedicure is on brand. 💅🏻

I’ll let you in on a secret: I’ve been doing this ‘grounding’ thing on the regular for a while.  Once a week or so?  And it really is a secret of sorts - I’ve never told anyone I do this.  You my friends, are finding out at the same time as my husband.  (Hey, D! 😍)

Why?  Because it sounds ‘woo-woo’, according to my own definition.  But come to think of it, my definition of ‘woo-woo’ is changing.

Where it used to be a word to describe any mystical-seeming practice, I now define ‘Woo’ simply as: Any method that can be used for reconnecting with yourself, with what you know is True with a capital T.

For some of you, the idea of ‘reconnecting with yourself’ sounds woo-woo in of itself.  And that’s cool.  I’ll just share my personal experience that a bit of woo/connection can have a disproportionate tangible impact on how you show up, and the results you achieve.

For me, whether or not I feel connected to myself is the difference between slaving through my to-do list vs. working towards my goals in flow.  It’s the difference between second-guessing myself vs. making empowered decisions.  It’s the difference between taking feedback or ‘failures’ as a personal slight vs. as valuable data in considering my next step.

The work I do in partnering with women to hone their authentic leadership style and write the next brilliant chapter of work and beyond is ALL about connecting with their WHO.  It mostly comes in the form of asking the right questions…with a sprinkling of other ‘woo’ if they are open to it. 😜

While I have yet to dabble in most of the ‘bucket of woo’ listed at the top of this note, I’m finding my woo in new places all the time, now that I’m open to it.

So, my definition of woo-woo is changing.  And here’s where I invite you to re-examine yours.

  •  What methods do you use to reconnect with yourself?

  • How open would you be to try something new?

I’d LOVE to know what comes up for you when you read this.  Hit reply and LMK how it goes!

In the meantime, I’ll be rooting for you!
